Mac Desktop Setup Nirvana

I am one of those people that tote around a 17” MacBook Pro and love it.  The MBP has been my primary development machine for going on four years now and I continue to think it is the best setup for the average nomadic Mac developer.  Even with the 17” MBP though, extra screen real estate is always nice to have, and historically I have used an external secondary monitor via the DVI out of the MBP.  This is a great setup that mainly developers end up using. Recently though, I have taken it one step further and I must say, I am totally loving the new setup.

Indie Mac Developer Band Wagon

All aboard.  After nearly three years working for a Mac photography software startup here in Honolulu, HI, I decided to resign and try my hand at starting a Mac indie dev shop.  I learned a lot these last three years and got to work with a bunch of great people.  During that time, we also created some really compelling software but for many reasons, its full potential was never realized and I was tired of waiting for the situation to improve.  The full story is really quite a tale, like many failed startups I’m sure, and maybe one I will go into more detail about eventually.

Moving forward I would like to introduce you to the companion company to this developer blog, Shacked Software.  Shacked is a Honolulu based software and design house specializing in Mac and iPhone applications. Targeting the needs of local Hawaii users, we are passionate about delivering complete platforms that solve real problems and simplify users lives. While primarily focused on internal projects, we also provide software contracting services to those looking for expertise in Mac and iPhone development.

Shacked is just getting off the ground but in the coming months, I and my business partner will be posting about the numerous challenges, both startup and programming related, that we are bound to encounter along the way and how we went about addressing them.

As I will try to do with most of my posts, I will leave you with a photo from Hawaii.  This one comes from the The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surf contest; the first time the waves were big enough for it to run in 5 years!
